Abstract
The turmoil in US telecommunication industry has shocked everyone
especially the Wall Street. The shockwave has reached the entire
globe affecting many international companies and impacted the world
economy. Prestigious company such as Lucent, AT&T, Nortel, and
many more are struggling under the threat of collapse. Innovative
network companies such as CISCO, Juniper Networks, and others
are facing tremendous business challenges. The world well known Bell
Laboratories has been downsized to the most critical level.
What happened and what is going to happen? This presentation takes
a dual track of technology and business view to attempt to answer the
trillion dollar question. The main issues of deliberation in this
presentation are
(1) Whether the past technological investments and mistakes learned
will reward a new telecommunication industry or the industry is
still searching for a killer application And
(2) Whether or not a new business model will evolve in the new
telecommunication industry to solve its current problems and deliver
a bright future.
